General Settings

Use the Project > Settings > General menu option (SETTINGS GX) to change the "general" default settings for your Oasis montaj environment. These are global variables and remain set for a given installation of Oasis montaj. The values are stored inside the 'geosettings' file located in the user specific folder '%USERPROFILE%\Documents\Geosoft\Desktop Applications \ini'. This means they remain the same for different data sets and Oasis montaj projects.

General Settings dialog options

Default project directory

The default location for your projects is set under your user profile Documents folder: %USERPROFILE%\Documents\Geosoft Projects. The subdirectory "Geosoft Projects" will be created if it does not exist.

Use the browse [...] button to select a different location for your project directory. New projects will be created under the selected parent folder.

Default menus

Select the menu files (*.omn) to load as the default menus when creating a new project. If more than one menu is selected, each menu must be separated by the | character.

Example: coremenus.omn|magmap.omn

Script Parameter: SETTINGS.DEFAULT_MENU

Default grid colour table

Select the default colour scheme for rendering the image of grids. If you mouse over the colour scheme entry, a tooltip will display the name of the colour table in its folder. To modify the selection, click on the colour entry and then navigate through the scheme categories.

Script Parameter: SETTINGS.DEFAULT_COLOUR

Default symbol colour table

Select the default colour scheme for rendering the image of symbols. If you mouse over the colour scheme entry, a tooltip will display the name of the colour table in its folder. To modify the selection, click on the colour entry and then navigate through the scheme categories.

Script Parameter: SETTINGS.DEFAULT_MAP_FONT

Default colour method

Set a preferred default colour distribution method for your project. Select the default colour method for rendering colour distributions as one of the following options: Equal Area, Linear, Log-Linear, or Normal.

All your displayed grids in your project will now use this colour distribution method.

Script Parameter: SETTINGS.DEFAULT_COLOUR_METHOD

Default distance unit

Select the default ground distance unit (e.g., metre, kilometre, centimetre, foot, etc.)

Script Parameter: SETTINGS.DEFAULT_UNIT

Default map font

Select the default map font. The configuration settings file 'truetype.ini' will be modified to map the "default" font from Geosoft PLT files to the TRUETYPE font specified here.

To change the mappings of other fonts you can modify the 'truetype.ini' file directly.

Script Parameter: SETTINGS.DEFAULT_SYMBOL_FONT

Default symbol font

Select the default symbol font (*.gfn) for selecting plot symbols.

Script Parameter: SETTINGS.DEFAULT_SYMBOL_FONT

Database compression

Specify the default type of compression to use when creating a new database. There are three options:

  • None: This setting uses no compression on the database.
  • Speed: Compress with database performance in mind. This setting is less compressed than the 'Size' option, but reduces processing time the most.
  • Size: Compress with database size in mind. This will achieve the smallest database size.

Script Parameter: SETTINGS.COMPRESSION

Text file editor

Select the text file editor program to use to view and modify text files.

You can also set the editor through the Select a Default Text Editor dialog.

Default input grid format

Select the input grid format you would like to use by default.

Script Parameter: SETTINGS.DEFAULT_XGD_IN

Default output grid format

Select the output grid format you would like to use by default.

Script Parameter: SETTINGS.DEFAULT_XGD_OUT

Default Geosoft grid element type

Specify the default option to use when creating a Geosoft grid. There are three options:

  • 16-bit (DOS compatible): If grids will be used with Geosoft DOS programs, use this setting.
  • Compressed 32-bit float: The default/recommended format. This setting maximizes the dynamic range precision of grid data and provides the smallest grid size.
  • 32-bit float: Use this option if compatibility with Oasis montaj ™ versions 4.2 and earlier is required.

Script Parameter: SETTINGS.XGD_DEFAULT

Load last project?

When you start Oasis montaj, you are prompted to select a project to open. Change this option to Yes, and the last project you were working with will open automatically.

Confirm database saves?

If the option Yes is preserved, when you close a project, you will be asked if you want to save any open databases. If you select No, the database(s) will be saved automatically.

Script Parameter: SETTINGS.CONFIRM_GDB_SAVE

Specify coordinate system on import?

Select if you would like to be prompted for coordinate system information on import.

If Yes is selected, when importing to a database and there is no projection specified in the current X and Y channels, then the SETCHPRJ GX is run so that you can set up the projection.

Some imports do their own specification of projection and are not affected by this setting.

Script Parameter: SETTINGS. NEW_GDB_PROJECTION

Error report level

Select the message level you want to see. If All errors is selected, you will see more error messages each time an error occurs. This is useful when contacting Technical Request if you experience a problem or for GX programmers who may need to see more error context when debugging GXs.

Script Parameter: SETTINGS.ERROR_LEVEL

HP-RTL nesting option

Oasis montaj provides the ability to nest your saved print files (*.PRN) for HP-RTL printing. Set the HP-RTL nesting option to "on" to enable the plotting of multiple maps on a single map sheet.

When you enable or disable nesting on an HP-RTL printer: the "INIT" parameter in the [HPRTL] section is set to the "INIT_NEST" or "INIT_NONEST" value respectively.

Script Parameter: SETTINGS.HPRTL_NESTING (0: off (default), 1: on)

Temporary file directory

This directory is used by Oasis montaj to store temporary files. Depending on the application, the requirements for storage in this directory can be very large (from 10 megabytes to gigabytes). We recommend setting this parameter to a very fast drive. This will improve performance of all large data operations (e.g., MAGMAP filtering, gridding, etc.)

Oasis montaj cannot start if this drive is invalid or if it is set to a drive in which it cannot create files. Please ensure that the directory is always valid.

In previous versions of Oasis montaj, the GEOTEMP environment variable determined where this directory was stored. This variable is no longer used and the setting is controlled through the Windows registry.
