Plot Colour Range Classified Symbols
If you do not require the more advanced scaling functionality provided in the COLSYMB GX, you may choose to plot simple coloured symbols. Use the Colour Range Symbols option to specify symbol plotting parameters and plot classified symbols on your map.
The Colour Range Symbols option is available with the following extensions and menus:
- Map Tools > Symbols menu option (CLASYMB GX)
- Geochemistry extension: Geochem Map > Point Plots menu option (CHCLSYMB GX)
- Grav/Mag Interpretation extension: Euler 3D > Plot Solution Symbols menu option (CLASYMB GX)
There are six dialogs with this GX.
Colours can be based on a variety of colour files, including zone (*.ZON), aggregate (*.AGG) or image transform (*.ITR) files. Plotting parameters include:
- Classification channel
- Number of ranges
- Symbol font
- Symbol weight
- Symbol edge colour
- Symbol angle
Colour Range Symbols dialog options
Classification channel |
Select channel to plot from current database. |
Number of ranges |
Number of ranges to plot, 1 to 12. |
Mask channel |
Select a mask channel from the drop-down list. If the use of the mask channel is enabled and set to this channel, only those data values whose corresponding mask channel values are not dummy values will be plotted or exported.Channels must have their CLASS attribute set to MASK to appear as selections in the drop-down list. If the mask channel does not exist, it will be created with its CLASS attribute set to MASK. |
Symbol font name |
Specify the symbol font name. |
Symbol weight |
Symbol weight, 7 weights are available "Normal" (default). |
Symbol edge colour |
Symbol edge colour, black by default. |
Symbol angle |
The symbol angle (in degrees clockwise) |

Application Notes
This GX uses the classification channel’s register to store the additional symbol information. The ranges are specified in the same manner as for an ITR file. If there are n ranges, then n -1 maximum values are specified, because range n applies to all values from the maximum value specified for range n -1 to "infinity".
The CLASSLEG GX can be used to plot a legend.
Plotted data is masked to the current data view’s clip region. Data outside the clip region is still written to the map, but is not visible. To see this data, uncheck the "Masked to view" box in the Map Manager tool.
If you are plotting symbols to a data view that is not oriented in 3D, the current X, Y channels must be set in the database.
If you are plotting symbols to a 3D oriented view, the current X, Y and Z channels must be set in the database. Symbols plotted to a 3D oriented view are projected to the section plane irrespective of the section thickness.
