Split Lines

It is often useful to split an existing line into parts. For example, you may want to import an entire survey flight as a single line and then sub-divide the line into separate survey lines at a specific fiducial. This can be done quickly by displaying the starting line in Profile format and using the cursor to click on the profile and determine the corresponding fiducial in the database.

Split a Line Based on a Fiducial (SPLTLINE GX)

  1. Make sure the database you want to use is open.

  2. On the Database Tools > Line Tools menu, select Split on Fiducial, or run the XYZLINE GX. The system displays a dialog with the currently selected line number.

  3. Specify the line number that you want to create and the fiducial at which you want to break the original line.

  4. Click OK. The system places all data (including the data at the designated fiducial) in a line with the number that you specified.

Split Lines Based on a Line Channel (BRKLINE GX)

If you have data from ASCII archives that have the line numbers in a column, you can import the data directly into a Geosoft database and then break up the lines automatically. You then break up the line into separate line segments Based on the imported line channel.

  1. Make sure the database you want to use is open.

  2. Select the Database > Import menu option or run the IMPORT GX to import all data including the line number column. Record the channel name corresponding to the line number column.

  3. On the Database Tools > Line Tools menu, select Split on Line Channel, or run the BRKLINE GX. The system displays a dialog with the currently selected line number.

  4. Accept or change the line number as required.

  5. Type the name of the channel in which the line data is stored.

  6. Click OK. The system breaks up the lines automatically.

  • After you break up a line, it will be empty and you can delete it. If there are existing lines with the same line number as the new line segment, the new line version is incremented.
  • Split Lines Based on X, Y Breaks (XYZLINE GX)

If you have a continuous block of data with no line headers or line breaks (i.e., line information concatenated together), you can import your data into Oasis montaj and break it into separate lines based on a specified distance tolerance.

For instance, if you are collecting airborne data at 5 m along the line and your lines are 100 m apart (i.e., high resolution survey), you could set the distance tolerance to 50 m, and the system would break the lines. The distance tolerance may vary according to your survey conditions but a general rule-of-thumb is to use one-half the distance of your line separation as a starting point.

    1. Make sure the database you want to use is open.

    2. On the Database Tools > Line Tools menu, select Split on X, Y Breaks, or run the XYZLINE GX. The system displays a dialog with the currently selected line number.

    3. Specify the X and Y channels.

    4. Specify the direction for breaking (X, Y or Any)

    5. Specify the distance tolerance and click OK. The system breaks the lines; you can now examine the lines in the database.
