Geographic Tagged Image File Format (GeoTIFF)
GeoTIFF is a collaborative effort involving over 160 remote sensing, GIS, cartographic, and surveying-related companies and organizations to create a TIFF-based format for georeferenced raster imagery.
GeoTIFF files contain geographic (or cartographic) data embedded as tags within the TIFF file. This data allows the image to be accurately positioned and displayed in the correct location and geometry on a geographic information display.
GeoTIFF is a metadata format that provides geographic information associated with the image data. The TIFF file structure enables both metadata and image data to be encoded within the same file.
A GeoTIFF file can be imported into any software capable of reading standard TIFF files. If the software is designed to utilize the additional geographic information in the GeoTIFF file, the image will be properly registered with other available datasets. Refer to your software documentation for specific details on handling GeoTIFF files.
