Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG)
The JPEG format (Joint Photographic Experts Group) is a widely used digital image format. It uses lossy compression, which means some image quality is sacrificed to reduce file size. This makes it ideal for web use and storage where smaller file sizes are important.
The most common JPEG file extensions are .jpg and .jpeg. These extensions are used interchangeably and represent the same JPEG format.
JPEG 2000 was developed to supersede the original JPEG standard and uses a wavelet-based method for compression, which offers better image quality and compression efficiency. JPEG 2000 supports both lossy and lossless compression, and its file extensions include .jp2 and .j2k.
