Vertical Derivative Filter

Use the Vertical Derivative option to apply a Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) vertical derivative filter to a channel.

The filter option is available with the following extensions and menus:

• 1D FFT > 1D Filtering
• Moving Platform Gravity  > Filters > Apply Single FFT Filter

Order of derivative

Specify the order of the derivative. Default: 1 Script Parameter: FFTVDRV.ORDER

Application Notes

• The vertical derivative is commonly applied to total magnetic field data to enhance shallow geological sources.

• As with other filters that enhance high-wavenumber components of the spectrum, this filter can amplify noise.

• To mitigate this, apply an additional low-pass filter to suppress high-wavenumber noise.
