Modify Planned Drillholes

Summary

The Modify tab of the Drillhole Planning tool can be used to modify existing planned drillholes by repositioning the collar and target locations or by redefining the collar and trace parameters.

Usage

There are three modes that can be used to plan drillholes:

  • Specify the proposed collar and target locations. In this mode, the trace parameters will be calculated.

  • Specify the proposed collar location and trace parameters. In this mode, the target location will be calculated.

  • Specify the proposed target location and trace parameters. In this mode, the collar location will be calculated.

When using the collar and target planning mode, you can specify the locations by clicking directly on a map or scene, or by changing the XYZ values for the collar or target in the tool. In this mode, the trace parameters (hole length, azimuth and inclination) will be automatically calculated.

When using the collar and trace planning mode, you can specify the collar location by clicking directly on the map or scene or by changing the XYZ values for the collar in the tool. You can specify the trace parameters (hole length, azimuth and inclination) by entering the values in the tool. In this mode, the target location will be calculated.

When using the target and trace planning mode, you can specify the target location by clicking directly on the map or scene or by changing the XYZ values for the target in the tool. You can specify the trace parameters (hole length, azimuth and inclination) by entering the values in the tool. This mode allows you to define the target location and angle of approach and have the collar location calculated for you.

Saving the Drillhole

Pressing the Save button, after the drillhole parameters are correctly set, will run the resurveying tool and commit the current drillhole location and parameters to the drillhole dataset. You may also Cancel the modifications and revert back to the original drillhole parameters, or Delete the planned drillhole from the dataset.

Parameters

Parameter Explanation

Planned Drillhole

The list of saved planned drillholes. From the drop down list, select the drillhole you want to modify: the drillhole parameters appear in the tool. On the current map or scene, the selected drillhole is highlighted.

Plan new hole using

Collar and target

Select this option if you specify the collar and target locations for the planned drillhole.
The trace parameters (length, azimuth and inclination) will be automatically calculated.

Collar and trace

Select this option if you specify the collar location and the trace parameters (length, azimuth and inclination) for the planned drillhole.

The target location will be automatically calculated.

Target and trace

Select this option if you specify the target location and the trace parameters (length, azimuth and inclination) for the planned drillhole.

The collar location will be automatically calculated.
 

Collar Location

The starting surface location of the drillhole. Press thebutton, next to Collar Location, to start an editing session and interactively place the drillhole collar point location anywhere on the active map or scene.

Collar Location XYZ

The x,y,z location of the collar point. The collar location values can be re-positioned using the Collar Location button or by typing in new values into the X, Y, Z fields.

Target Location

The final end point of the drillhole in the subsurface. Press the button, next to Target Location, to interactively place the drillhole target point location anywhere on the active map or scene.

Target Location XYZ

The x,y,z location of the target point. The target location values can be re-positioned using the Target Location button or by typing in new values into the X, Y, Z fields.

Map Spatial Reference

The coordinate reference system of the current map/scene.

Snap collar elevation to topography

Slide on to snap the collar elevation to the topography. See Technical Notes below for more details.

Raster Dataset

Select the raster dataset to use for the Collar Location Z value.

The Collar Location Z field gets automatically populated with the value calculated from the selected raster dataset.

Drillhole Trace

Hole length

The straight line distance between the collar and target points. Automatically calculated when the (X ,Y) collar and target locations are specified.

Azimuth

The angle of the line connecting the collar and the target points measured clockwise from North (0°) degrees. Automatically calculated when the (X, Y) collar and target locations are specified.

Inclination

The angle (dip)  of the line connecting the collar and the target points measured from horizontal (0°) degrees.

 

Hole ID

The name (identifier) for the new proposed drillhole. Pre-populated with "My drillhole".

The proposed drillhole name must be unique for the current drillhole dataset.

Description

The description information for the new proposed drillhole.

Technical Notes

Snap Collar Elevation to Topography

For either of the three drillhole planning modes described above, you can specify a topography (or elevation) raster dataset to use for the collar elevation values.

This option is required when using the Target and Trace planning mode.

When this option is enabled and a raster dataset is selected, the X and Y location of the collar point will be used to extract a Z (elevation) value from the specific raster dataset. Note that the selected raster dataset must be a raster in a geodatabase. Topography data can be imported from Geosoft grids files by using the Import Geosoft Grids tool that is part of Target.

Drillhole dip-direction convention

The assumed convention that is used in Target for ArcGIS Pro is that downward pointing holes have a negative dip value and upward pointing holes have a positive dip value. This convention can be changed in the Drillhole Settings tab of the backstage area. Planned drillholes follow the same convention: by default, they will have negative dips for holes pointing down. If the user has changed the setting to use the opposite, the planned drillholes will have positive dips pointing down.
