ArcGIS Pro: Supported and Recommended Versions

Target for ArcGIS Pro ("Target Pro") is an extension to the Esri's platform, ArcGIS Pro. As such, we constantly have to adjust which versions of ArcGIS Pro our extension can be installed on top of. First, some definitions:

Minimum Version

There is a minimum (or base, or "target") version, which is the lowest version that Target Pro can be installed on. The installer .exe will not allow the install of the extension on ArcGIS Pro versions lower than the minimum version.

Example: if you try to install Target Pro 2023.1 on to ArcGIS Pro 2.9, the installer will not allow this. ArcGIS Pro 2.9 is below the minimum required version for Target Pro 2023.1.

Recommended Version

While testing a new version of Target Pro, we will often discover that one of the "supported" versions is more reliable, stable, or simply better to use with Target Pro. We share this knowledge with our users by calling this the "recommended version". It is not always the most recent release of ArcGIS Pro, and you are not required to use this version if you do not wish.

Example: the current recommended version of Target Pro 2023.1 is ArcGIS Pro 3.0.

Supported Versions

Each version of Target Pro can only be installed on certain specific versions of ArcGIS Pro. These are called the "supported versions". There are usually two minor supported versions of ArcGIS Pro for each version of Target Pro.

Example: the current release of Target Pro 2023.1 can be installed and used on ArcGIS Pro 3.0; this is the "supported version" for Target Pro 2023.1.

Unsupported Versions

Unsupported versions can mean two things:

  1. Versions released after the most recent release of Target Pro.
    • Example: the release of Target Pro 2.2 (Nov 2020) occurred before ArcGIS Pro 2.7 was released (Dec 2020). Hence, we say that ArcGIS Pro 2.7 is "not supported" with Target Pro 2.2. Since this combination has not been validated internally, we cannot be sure that there are no bugs/ unpleasant user experiences that result from these two versions being used together. However, there is nothing preventing you from installing Target Pro 2.2 on ArcGIS Pro 2.7.
  2. Versions below the minimum version.

Changing the Minimum Version

We usually change the minimum supported version at the same time that we add a new supported version. So, when we "added" support for ArcGIS Pro 2.6, we also "dropped" support for ArcGIS Pro 2.4.  Sometimes, the addition of new features will require us to make a specific version the new minimum version. An example of this is the use of graphic overlays in drawing sections outlines – graphic overlays are only available in vs. 2.6 and above, so this becomes the new minimum version.

This usually happens with every (or every other) release of Target Pro.

Example: with the release of Target Pro 2.0, the minimum version was ArcGIS Pro 2.4. At Target Pro 2.2, the minimum version was ArcGIS Pro 2.5, and ArcGIS Pro 2.4 was no longer a supported version.

We try to aim for two versions of ArcGIS Pro to be supported with every version of Target Pro.  These should be the two most recent versions of ArcGIS Pro at the time of Target Pro's release.

Example: Target Pro 2.2 can be used with ArcGIS Pro 2.5 & 2.6, Target Pro 2.3 can be used with ArcGIS Pro 2.6 & 2.7, Target Pro 2.4 can be used with ArcGIS Pro 2.7 & 2.8, while Target Pro 2023.1 can be used with ArcGIS Pro 3.0.

Adding a New Supported Version

When a new version of ArcGIS Pro is released, we aim to add it to the "supported versions" with the very next release of Target Pro.

ArcGIS Pro Versioning Specification

The information below is extracted from the ArcGIS Pro What's new > Releases and patches page:

  • ArcGIS Pro uses the "Major.Minor.Patch" version number scheme. For example, for 2.6.1: Major = 2, Minor = 6, and Patch = 1.
  • "Major releases introduce changes that are not backward compatible. These include changes to ArcGIS Pro project files (.aprx) and other document formats, such as project templates, layers, maps, and layouts. Major releases also introduce breaking API changes to the ArcGIS Pro SDK for .NET."
  • "Add-ins are neither backward compatible nor forward compatible across major releases. An add-in built for version 2.x will not load in version 1.x. An add-in built for version 1.x will not load in version 2.x. At major releases, developers need to rebuild add-ins using the latest version of ArcGIS Pro SDK for .NET."
