ArcGIS Pro: Supported and Recommended Versions
Target for ArcGIS Pro is an extension designed for Esri’s ArcGIS Pro platform. As ArcGIS Pro evolves, we update which versions of the extension are compatible.
On this page, “Target for ArcGIS Pro” and “the extension” are used interchangeably. The sections below describe key versioning concepts and compatibility rules.
Backward Compatibility
Target for ArcGIS Pro is not backward compatible. Newer versions of the extension do not support older versions of ArcGIS Pro. If you upgrade Target for ArcGIS Pro, you may also need to upgrade ArcGIS Pro to a supported version.
Using the extension with an unsupported ArcGIS Pro version can result in installation failures or unpredictable behaviour.
Key Definitions
Minimum Version
The minimum version is the lowest ArcGIS Pro version on which the extension can be installed. The installer blocks installation on versions below this minimum.
Examples:
-
Installing Target for ArcGIS Pro 2026.1 on ArcGIS Pro 3.4 requires upgrading to ArcGIS Pro 3.6.
-
Installing Target for ArcGIS Pro 2024.2 on ArcGIS Pro 3.3 fails because the minimum required version is ArcGIS Pro 3.4.
Supported Versions
Supported versions are the ArcGIS Pro versions against which a specific extension release has been tested and validated.
Examples:
-
Target for ArcGIS Pro 2026.1 supports ArcGIS Pro 3.6.
-
Target for ArcGIS Pro 2024.2 supports ArcGIS Pro 3.4, including patches 3.4.2 and 3.4.3.
Recommended Version
Some supported ArcGIS Pro versions provide improved stability or performance. These are the recommended versions.
Using a recommended version is optional and does not necessarily mean using the latest ArcGIS Pro release.
Examples:
-
Target for ArcGIS Pro 2024.2 → Recommended: ArcGIS Pro 3.4.3
-
Target for ArcGIS Pro 2024.1 → Recommended: ArcGIS Pro 3.2
Unsupported Versions
An ArcGIS Pro version is considered unsupported in either of the following cases:
-
Versions newer than the extension
If ArcGIS Pro is released after a Target for ArcGIS Pro version, it has not been validated with that extension release.
-
Target for ArcGIS Pro 2023.1 (released May 2023) predates ArcGIS Pro 3.2 (released Nov 2023). ArcGIS Pro 3.2 is therefore unsupported with Target for ArcGIS Pro 2023.1.
-
Versions below the minimum version
ArcGIS Pro versions lower than the minimum version cannot run the extension at all.
Example:
You can install the extension on newer ArcGIS Pro versions, but compatibility is not guaranteed.
Changing the Minimum Version
We typically update the minimum ArcGIS Pro version when adding support for a newer ArcGIS Pro release. For example, when support for ArcGIS Pro 3.0 was added, support for ArcGIS Pro 2.8 was dropped.
Occasionally, new features require raising the minimum version. For example, graphic overlays used in drawing section outlines are only available in ArcGIS Pro 2.6 and later, which makes earlier versions incompatible.
Examples:
-
Target for ArcGIS Pro 2023.1 → Minimum: ArcGIS Pro 3.0 (versions earlier than 3.0 are no longer supported)
-
Target for ArcGIS Pro 2.4 → Minimum: ArcGIS Pro 2.7
This typically occurs with every release or every other release.
Adding a New Supported Version
When Esri releases a new ArcGIS Pro version, we aim to include it as a supported version in the next Target for ArcGIS Pro release.
ArcGIS Pro Versioning
The information below is derived from ArcGIS Pro documentation under What's new > Releases and patches.
ArcGIS Pro uses a Major · Minor · Patch versioning format (e.g., 2.6.1).
Major releases introduce changes that are not backward compatible. These changes can affect:
-
Project file formats (.aprx)
-
Templates, layers, maps, and layouts
-
The ArcGIS Pro SDK for .NET, including breaking API changes
Important:
Add-ins are not backward or forward compatible across major ArcGIS Pro versions. For example, an add-in built for ArcGIS Pro 2.x will not load in 1.x or 3.x.
Developers must rebuild add-ins using the appropriate version of the ArcGIS Pro SDK for .NET for each major ArcGIS Pro release.
