Rename Blocks and Horizons

Use the Rename Blocks and Horizons menu option to standardize block and horizon names in a group of models. Doing so will help with model consistency and enable you to manipulate and extract features common to multiple models.

Rename Blocks and Horizons dialog options

Included models

Specify whether you wish to act on all of the models in the workspace, or just the "Active" subset.

  • Changing this setting will delete any unsaved changes already made to the block and horizon names below.
  • Models

This read-only list shows all of the included models, based on your selection above.

    • An italicized model name indicates that there are unsaved changes to that model.
    • A normal text model name indicates that the selected block or horizon (at right) is found in the model.
    • A greyed out model name indicates that the selected block or horizon (at right) is not found in the model.

    Blocks tab

This list displays all of the unique block names found in the models listed at left.

    • When a block name is selected, models that contain that block are shown in regular text at left; models that do not contain the block are greyed-out.
    • To edit a name, select it, then click on the pencil icon. Edit the name – it must not be an empty string.
    • When you have finished editing the name, the list of names will be refreshed.
      • If the edited name matches an existing name in other models, they will be combined and shown as a single entry in the list.
      • If the edited name matches an existing block name in the same model(s), you will receive a warning that a block(s) by that name already exist in the same model. If you elect to continue with the change, the block names will be combined and shown as a single entry in the list.
    • Changes are not permanent until you click either Apply or OK. Apply enables you to save changes without closing the dialog.

    Horizons tab

This list displays all of the unique horizon names found in the models listed at left.

    • When a horizon name is selected, models that contain that horizon are shown in regular text at left; models that do not contain the horizon are greyed-out.
    • To edit a name, select it, then click on the pencil icon. Edit the name – it must not be an empty string and it cannot match an existing horizon in the same model.
    • When you have finished editing the name, the list of names will be refreshed. The names of the affected models will be shown in italics at left.
    • If the edited name matches an existing name in other models, they will be combined and shown as a single entry in the list.
    • Changes are not permanent until you click either Apply or OK. Apply enables you to save changes without closing the dialog.

    [Active Models]

Click the Active Models button, to open the Select Active Models dialog, which enables you to specify which models in your workspace are designated as "Active" and will be processed.

  • If you make this change while you have unsaved changes, they will be lost.
  • Application Notes

    • A block is a fundamental part of a model and cannot be deleted using this interface. A horizon is a secondary object, linking surfaces within the model and associating a label to that grouping; deleting the horizon label does not affect the fundamental model structure and is allowed here.
    • Block and Horizon names that differ only by case are permitted, but not encouraged. For most purposes, case will be ignored and names consolidated when extracting blocks and/or horizons. For example, blocks named "basement," "Basement," and "BASEMENT" can coexist within a model or suite of models, but when exporting them to a geostring file, the resulting feature might be named "basement" but will include all three block boundaries.
    • Block and horizons names may not be empty strings.
    • Horizons with problems related to naming (e.g. duplicate horizon names in the same model, or un-named horizons) are annotated and displayed in italics. The horizons can then be named/renamed as necessary, or horizons can be deleted entirely from all listed models in which they are found, in order to rectify the list.
    • One or more blocks and a horizon may share the same name within a model and/or within the workspace.
    • Multiple blocks within a model may have the same name, but horizon names must be unique within each model. Thus, you may have several "basement" blocks in a model, but only one "Basement" horizon.
