3D Mapping

3D mapping in Oasis montaj has been redesigned to streamline your workflow and enhance usability by providing all of your 3D-visualisation settings, functions, and tools in one integrated 3D environment: the 3D Viewer.

3D Viewer provides a range of options for visualizing your data in three dimensions, including 3D voxel grids and displaying multiple surfaces, each with its own relief and contents, and each with its own orientation in 3D space. You can drape a coloured grid or image file over a topographic surface or digital elevation model (DEM) grid. The 3D technology also enables you to display Geosoft map aggregates, which may contain a number of images, symbols and interpretation features over a topographic surface grid.

Maps in Oasis montaj use ‘Views’ to organize and display information. A typical 2D map includes both a ‘Base’ and a ‘Data’ view, but maps can have more views for different purposes, for example 3D Views. Like a 2D map, a 3D map also represents coordinates; in this case in X, Y and Z.

A 3D View can be created by selecting the New 3D View option from the 3D View menu. In Target or with the Drillhole Plotting extension, you can also create a 3D View by selecting New 3D View from the DH-Plot menu, and in the Oasis montaj Induced Polarization extension, you can use the IP Stacked Section option to create a 3D View.

3D Views may also contain any number of 3D drawing planes. Any group or drawing object that can be drawn on a 2D View can be drawn on a 'Plane' in a 3D View. Each plane in a 3D View can be oriented independently in the 3D coordinate system. A plane in a 3D View can be flat or it can have a surface relief defined by a grid file.

Using the Add to 3D menu in the 3D Viewer, you can add planes, relief surfaces, grids, voxels, vector voxels, isosurfaces, 3D drillholes, geostrings, geosurfaces, 3D symbols, 2D map groups, and import a variety of file formats directly into your 3D View. For more information, see 3D Viewer.

You can manipulate the 3D View using the interactive viewing tools provided with the 3D Viewer. When a 3D View is displayed in the 3D Viewer, you will be able to interactively change the point of view, modify certain display parameters, interactively change transparency settings for each object, and add or delete planes, surfaces and other 3D objects.
