3D Symbols – View and Modify Attributes
Use the Attributes tab to view and modify the properties of the 3D symbols in your 3D View. For more information on clipping, refer to the Modify 3D Clipping topic. For more information on the colour legend, refer to the Modify 3D Legend topic .

To specify the transparency of the 3D symbols:
The transparency of 3D symbols can be adjusted interactively by moving the slider on the Transparency bar. To increase the transparency, slide the bar to the right, and to decrease the transparency, slide the bar to the left.
To determine the source database:
The source database used for plotting the 3D symbols is listed below the Transparency slider.
To determine the elevation channel:
Click on the Edit 3D Symbols button to open the Edit 3D Symbols dialog.
-
The elevation channel used for plotting the 3D symbols is listed under Elevation channel, but it cannot be changed. Replot the 3D symbols if you wish to change the elevation channel.
To determine and change the mask channel:
Click on the Edit 3D Symbols button to open the Edit 3D Symbols dialog.
-
The channel used as a mask channel in plotting the 3D symbols is listed under Mask channel. Use the drop-down list to select a different mask channel.
To determine and change the 3D symbols type:
Click on the Edit 3D Symbols button to open the Edit 3D Symbols dialog.
-
The symbol type used in plotting the 3D symbols is listed under Shape. Use the drop-down list to select a different symbol type for plotting the 3D symbols.
To access and change the colour options and tools:
Click on the Edit 3D Symbols button to open the Edit 3D Symbols dialog.
-
The Colour option selection indicates if the symbols are plotted with a specific unchanging colour or based on selected Channel data values, Colours scheme and Method.
-
If the colour option is Fixed, click inside the Colour box to display the Colour selection dialog. Using this tool, you can select a colour from the Basic Colours table, or by clicking the Define Custom Colours>> button, you can specify a custom colour.
-
If the colour option is Variable, click inside the Colours box to display the Select Colour Scheme dialog. To modify the selection, navigate through the colour scheme categories, select a scheme and click OK. Select a colour method to be used with the selected colour scheme; the Method will determine how the colours are applied to the data values. Optionally, check Reverse colour distribution to reverse the distribution order of the selected colour scheme. Selecting a colour scheme file with the extension *.zon or *.itr will hide the colour method option and remove the parameter altogether in the Attributes panel.
If the 3D symbols are variably coloured, the Colour Tool button becomes available in the 3D Manager, on the toolbar and as a context menu. Click the button and the Colour Tool dialog will be displayed. The tool enables you to revise and interactively edit the colour display of the selected group and to simultaneously apply the changes to your selected data.
To access and change the size options:
Click on the Edit 3D Symbols button to open the Edit 3D Symbols dialog.
-
The Size option selection indicates if the symbols plotted are fixed in size or sized in proportion to selected Channel data values.
-
If the size option is Fixed, you can change the fixed size by entering a new value in the Size field.
-
If the size option is Proportional, select a channel for sizing the symbols and set the desired Minimum and Maximum size values. Check Use log scale if log distribution is desired for plotting proportionally sized symbols (note this is auto-selected for Assay channels). Use the Calculator buttons to reset the fields to the default estimated values.
Application Notes
Clicking the Edit 3D Symbols button also opens the referenced source database listed in the Attributes panel (a prompt to locate will be displayed if it cannot be found in its original location).
-
Editing the selected 3D symbols group and clicking OK in the Edit 3D Symbols dialog, redraws the 3D symbols group in the 3D View, and also updates the read-only parameters in the Attributes panel.
-
A legend tab will not automatically appear for any 3D Symbol groups that were created prior to version 9.3. In order to create the legend, either replot the 3D symbols by going to Add to 3D | 3D Symbols… or select the symbols group that you would like a legend for and click the Edit button on the Attributes tab. The 3D Symbols Legend tab will appear as soon as the group has been refreshed.
-
3D Symbols groups generated prior to version 9.1 will continue to appear in the 3D Manager tree with vector icons and with limited information displayed in the Attributes panel (Transparency slider and Colour control button). 3D Symbols that were generated post-9.1 will provide additional, more detailed information in the Attributes panel. The 3D Symbols groups are backwards compatible; however, the information in the Attributes panel will be limited to that of the previous versions.
