Conversion between Field Components (TXYZ)

Use the Conversion between Field Components option to apply the field component conversion filter.

Conversion between Field Components dialog options

Inclination

Geomagnetic inclination I, in degrees from the horizon.

Declination

Geomagnetic declination D, in degrees azimuth.

Input field component

Select the input component from the drop-down list:

  • Total Field

  • X Component

  • Y Component

  • Z Component

Use of the X and Y components as input is not recommended (see Application Notes below).

Output field component

Select the output component from the drop-down list:

  • Total Field

  • X Component

  • Y Component

  • Z Component

Application Notes

The field conversion filter operator converts between magnetic field components. Although any single magnetic field component can theoretically be used to compute any other, in practice the stronger and more stable components—the total field and the vertical (Z) component—should be used as input.

Using the X or Y components may introduce singularities along directions normal to the declination azimuth, resulting in directional instability.

Wavenumber Domain Variable Definitions

The following variables are used in the wavenumber domain:

k

Wavenumber increment, used to depict a radially symmetrical variable.

Where:

np: number of points

cs: cell size

μ

X-component of the wavenumber.

v

Y-component of the wavenumber.

r

Radial component of the wavenumber.

θ

Angular (polar) component of the wavenumber.
