Import ArcGIS LYRX File

Use the Import ArcGIS LYRX File option (geogxnet.dll(Geosoft.GX.ArcGIS.ImportLYRX;Run))* to add an ArcGIS Pro Layer File (.lyrx) to a new or existing 2D map or 3D view. When added to a new map, the extents of the Data view are defined by the extents of the data referenced by the layer ("LYRX") file.

The option is available under the following menus:

  • Map > Import > ArcGIS LYRX File

  • ArcGIS Tools > Import ArcGIS LYRX File

This functionality can only be accessed on systems that have a licensed copy of ArcGIS Pro installed.

ArcGIS Pro LYRX file

Specify the ArcGIS Pro LYRX file (*.lyrx) to import. Click on the browse button to locate and select a file.

You can use the 'Save As Layer File' tool in ArcGIS Pro to create an output layer file (.lyrx) from a map layer. The layer file stores many properties of the input layer such as symbology, labeling, and custom pop-ups.

Script Parameter: ARCGIS_ADDLYRX.LYRX

Layer Stylx file

To ensure consistency across maps, you may want to incorporate an ArcGIS Pro Style file when importing your LYRX files.

ArcGIS Pro styles, identifiable by a .stylx file extension, store symbols and a variety of style elements such as colours, colour schemes, layout components, and more.

To find and select a .stylx file, click on the browse button located to the right of this field.

Script Parameter: ARCGIS_ADDLYRX.STYLX

Display

You have the option to display the import LYRX file in a new or existing map:

  • New Map: select this option to create a new map and add the selected LYRX file to it.
  • Current Map: select this option to import the LYRX file into the existing map. If there is no map currently open, you will be prompted to browse and select an existing map.

Script Parameter: ARCGIS_ADDLYRX.CURRENT [ 0: New map (default), 1 : Existing map]

Map scale

This parameter is contextual and becomes active when the "New Map"option is selected.

If no map scale is specified, the new map will be created with a default size of 30cm by 30cm, with a map scale determined to fit the data.

Script Parameter: ARCGIS_ADDLYRX.SCALE (default = not defined)

Application Notes

*The GX.NET tools are embedded in the geogxnet.dll file located in the "...\Geosoft\Desktop Applications \bin" folder. If running this GX interactively, bypassing the menu, first change the folder to point to the "bin" directory, then supply the GX.NET tool in the specified format. See the topic Run GX for more details on running a GX.NET interactively.

Supported Types
  • Feature class: in order to import a LYRX file created from a feature class, you must have both the LYRX file and the ESRI file geodatabase (to which both the feature class and the LYRX file are associated).

  • Shapefile: a shapefile is essentially a feature class that is not linked to a file geodatabase. To import a LYRX file created from a shapefile, you will need the shapefile and the LYRX file.

  • ArcGIS Map Service: a map service is a data hosting service that provides map images for display in a client application, and the images can be rendered dynamically for a specific extent or pre-rendered and cached in a tile grid as static images. To import a LYRX file created from a map sevice, you will need only the LYRX file.

Supported Versions
  • LYRX files generated in the following ArcGIS Pro versions are compatible for import into Oasis montaj: 2.8, 2.9, 3.0, 3.1, and 3.2.

  • Currently, Oasis montaj does not support the import of files that have been created in ArcGIS Pro versions 3.3 & up.

Reprojection

The projection of the LYRX files is honoured in Oasis montaj:

  • When the imported LYRX file is added to a new map, the coordinate system of the map will be automatically set to the coordinate system of the first LYRX file added to the map.

  • A LYRX file that is not natively in the coordinate system of the current map, is re-projected “on-the-fly” to the coordinate system of the map.

You can always check the status bar of the map window for information on the map's coordinate system and units.

Geosoft Map Identify Tool

LYRX files serve as visual representations of live data links, and you can use the Map Identity Tool to query data attributes for the features within the LYRX groups: with the tool activated, click on the feature of interest on the map and view the attributes of the data at that specific location.

ArcGIS Pro Style Files (.stylx)

You can search for styles in ArcGIS Online, use the styles that are authored by Esri and included in the ArcGIS Pro installation. or you can create your own style file (.stylx) in ArcGIS Pro.

To save a style, you just need to create a style in a project, select a file location for the style file (the location can be on a file system outside your ArcGIS project), and populate it with symbols or other style items. You can then share this .stylx file the same way you share any other file.
