Using the TraceViewer Tool

The TraceViewer is a tool that enables you to view trace headers and traces to determine the correct location and format of trace header fields and the correct data format for traces. The TraceViewer is a modeless dialog; you don’t need to close it to work in other dialogs. At the top of the dialog are tools to scroll through the traces.

  • Changes made in the TraceViewer do not change the configuration of the file being read. Changes to byte-ordering must be made in the SEG-Y Disk Format topic. Non-standard trace-header formats must be changed in the appropriate topic; Trace Order, Trace Masking, Navigation, Shot Point, Inline/Crossline.
  • To Run the TraceViewer Tool

    1. On the Explore menu, select TraceViewer. The TraceViewer tool opens.

    2. In the SEG-Y File section you can select whether the file was built on a Big Endian or Little Endian machine. You can also configure the trace-header as both 2- and 4-byte integers, enabling you to determine the byte offset and storage format of the shotpoint, navigation, or other fields necessary to configure your SEG-Y output.

    3. The Trace Data View section at the bottom of the dialog displays the current trace, as read using the selected trace data format. You may choose between the available trace formats and visually determine which is correct. Use the selection tools at the top of the dialog to scroll through traces in your SEG Y file.

    4. When you are finished making adjustments, click OK. You are returned to SEG-Y Reader.
