Import Data

One of the important capabilities of Oasis montaj is that it provides seamless access to both unprocessed data (raw survey data) and processed data (e.g., grids, images, plots).

When working with raw data, the term "access" means that you have the ability to import a wide range of raw data in many standard ASCII and Binary formats directly into an Oasis database. Access to data is seamless because the system reads data column-by-column into its binary database — an efficient architecture designed to accommodate very large datasets.

After your data is in the system, it remains close at hand. Data is always available on your Oasis montaj desktop (also called a project) so that you eliminate the problem of searching for data or having to use another software package to manipulate and visualize data. If you work with multiple types of data or want to store specific data separately, the system also enables you to open and work with multiple databases simultaneously.

When working with processed data, access means that you can easily add grids, voxels, images, Geosoft plot files, etc., directly into maps in the Oasis montaj project. Access to processed data is seamless because the system supports a wide range of standard image formats. You can quickly add a bitmap, tagged image format, encapsulated postscript, DXF or other type of image, and create a professional quality map — all from within a single data processing system.

Metadata (data about data) is captured by Oasis montaj from the first time the data is touched. The metadata information, which is based on ISO 19115 standards, is stored inside the data (if supported) or as a companion XML file.

Spaces in files and channel names

Oasis montaj supports spaces in file names. File names may only include letters, numbers and spaces. Parentheses and other characters are not supported.

Channel names in the spreadsheet database cannot contain spaces.

If you have any issues importing or processing data files due to file name problems, see the Technical Support page.

Drag-n-Drop: fast and simple data viewing

Oasis montaj includes a "drag-n-drop" data technology. This allows you to drag recognized document types such as .GRD, .MAP, and .GDB files directly from Windows Explorer and drop them into Oasis montaj for display.

You can also drag XYZ files and drop them into an open GDB document. Datasets in the Project Explorer may also be dragged and dropped into the workspace. Dataset types, such as grids, can be dragged from the Project Explorer and dropped into Maps and 3D Views.
